Table of Contents
Every year, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters nationwide, according to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. Of those, about 3.3 million are dogs and 3.2 million are cats.
Each week, The Arizona Republic highlights a handful of the many pets up for adoption at Valley shelters. To check the status of a specific animal, please contact the shelter directly.
Sashay: A beauty with emerald-green eyes and a loving personality
Sashay, a 1-year-old gray and white kitty, is a real beauty, especially with her dazzling emerald-green eyes. Not only is she good-looking, but she also has all of the best qualities a pet owner is looking for: a sweet and loving personality, doesn’t fuss when picked up and held, and even looks forward to a nice brushing to keep her in tip-top shape. Sashay does not like the company of other cats or dogs, however. Unfortunately, her owner passed away, so this lovely girl is available for adoption and will welcome you for a visit at Sun Cities 4 Paws, 11129 Michigan Ave., Youngtown.
How to adopt: Call 623-876-8778 after 9 a.m.; adoptions are Tuesdays-Saturdays, 9-3 p.m. Other adoption locations are the shelter at 10807 N. 96th Ave., Peoria; Tuesdays-Saturdays, 10-3 p.m.; call 623-773-2246 after 10 a.m. Also visit the Surprise PetSmart, 13764 Bell Road, and Lake Pleasant Towne Center PetSmart, 25372 Lake Pleasant Parkway, Peoria.

Clementine: A shy girl in need of a loving and patient home
Who doesn’t love a refreshing little Clementine during the Arizona heat? Especially one as cute as this 3-year-old Queensland Healer! Originally found as an injured stray by a Good Samaritan in mid-July, this adorable pup had a slight injury to one of her paws that healed relatively quickly with medical attention.
Although she was found to have a small wound, it has actually been Clementine’s emotional journey that has been the greatest. While first in the care of the Arizona Humane Society, she was extremely nervous, stressed and untrusting. Not even able to walk on a leash without becoming frightened, AHS’ Behavior Team has worked with her diligently to help her become a well-rounded, sociable and happy girl.
Originally frightened of most things, Clementine now enjoys the company of her human friends and even seeks out pets, is very good on walks and will warm up to new people who are understanding and patient with her. Plus, a little bit of food never hurts when trying to befriend this spotted beauty! Because she can still be a bit shy and takes time to warm up, Clementine would do best as the only doggo in her future home.
How to adopt: The Arizona Humane Society’s Virtual Matchmaking Adoptions by appointment is available to place pets with their forever families. Interested adopters can view available pets, like curious Clementine, and schedule an appointment online at azhumane.org/adopt.

Duff: A playful pup
Duff is an adorable, energetic 6-9-month-old male, Scottish Terrier mix weighing about 25 lbs. Duff is playful, which is typical for his age. He’ll do best in a home with kids 8 years and older. He recently returned from being in a foster home because his foster family was going on vacation. In his foster home, he used the doggy door and appeared housetrained. He is easy to train and knows “sit”. Duff would love to meet you! Duff resides at Friends for Life’s adoption center located at 952 W. Melody Ave. in Gilbert. He is neutered, licensed, vaccinated and microchipped. His adoption fee is $295.00.
How to adopt: If you are interested in meeting Duff, visit the adoption center, call 480-497-8296, email [email protected], or visit them online at azfriends.org to get started with the consultation form and find hours of operation.

Lorelai: A senior pet looking for a home in her golden years
A variation of the German name meaning “alluring,” Lorelai definitely has quite the unique look and leaves you wanting to know more about her backstory. The lovely 12-year-old medium hair tortoiseshell kitty was brought to a local emergency animal clinic prior to being picked up by an Arizona Humane Society Emergency Animal Medical Technician all the way back in June.
Lorelai was in rough shape when she arrived at AHS’ animal trauma hospital as she was injured with an ear hematoma, underweight and dehydrated. As a part of her medical treatment, she underwent surgery to clean the wound on her ear. During the procedure, veterinarians found necrotic tissue that needed to be removed which has left Lorelai with her interesting-looking ears.
Although not much is known about her past, Lorelai continues to show that she has a lot of love to give each day and is just wanting of love in return for her golden years. As with most senior pets, this gorgeous gal may do best in a quieter home that lets her adjust at her own pace. Her future family will also need to keep an eye out for possible recurring ear infections due to her previous injuries, but otherwise, she has shown to be quite healthy while in the shelter.
