OGDEN — A message broadcast to fans in attendance by the public address announcer before the Ogden-Ben Lomond football game Wednesday went like this:
“The Utah High School Activities Association welcomes you to tonight’s varsity football game. We encourage good sportsmanship by each of you in attendance. Please show respect for the coaches, officials, players and other fans in attendance; by doing so, you’ll help to ensure a positive atmosphere of competition. Thank you, and enjoy the game.”
For the first time since 2014, a near-capacity crowd at a high school venue gathered to watch the 69th annual Iron Horse football game between the Tigers and Scots and basically behaved themselves inside the stadium.
On the field, the Tigers didn’t foster a feeling of competition for long, pounding their cross-town rival Scots 42-7 in a 3A North clash.
Ogden junior running back Chet Colvin rushed for four touchdowns to lead the Tiger attack. His fourth TD, a 46-yard sweep, made it 35-0 with 3:34 left in the third quarter and started a running clock.
“It’s my first time to score four touchdowns. I’m happy coach gave me the ball; I was able to run it. I’m super excited,” Colvin said. “Our offensive line did amazing tonight, couldn’t have done it without them. They got great blocks. I saw the hole, I was able to hit it. Everybody did what they needed to do.”
Quarterback Chino Furniss found Jaden Gallegos wide open in the end zone with a 43-yard toss early in the final frame to complete the ledger for the Tigers that totaled 42-0.
Ben Lomond avoided the shutout, taking the ensuing kickoff on a 6-minute drive that resulted in an 8-yard pass from quarterback Austin Herbert to Marcus Royster for a touchdown and the final 42-7 margin.
Ogden (3-7, 1-4 3A North) scored a pair of touchdowns in each of the first two quarters, racing to a 28-0 halftime lead.
Colvin tallied three first-half touchdowns, covering a wide spectrum of turf with scores ranging between 18, 2 and 53 yards. His first, the 18-yarder, with 9:17 left in the initial quarter, put the Scots (1-9, 0-5) in an early hole they never climbed out of.
Charmbay Jones added the other touchdown, a pick-six from 35 yards away midway through the first period.
The Tigers boosted their overall record against Ben Lomond to 52-22 and own a 49-20 edge in Iron Horse games.
“I love this game (the rivalry). It’s just awesome; no matter what our record is, it’s always a good game,” Colvin said. “No matter how good or bad our teams are, this is always a big game.”
