FRANKLIN COUNTY, Va. (WFXR) — Amid concerns about crowded kennels, the Franklin County Animal Shelter is offering half-off adoptions for numerous dogs, cats, and kittens in order to help these furry friends find families ahead of the holiday season.
The animal shelter says it has numerous dogs available for adoption, as well as dogs on stray hold.
If you are missing your dog or know the owner of the stray dogs photographed below, you are urged to claim the dog or tell the owner to come claim their dog.
Meanwhile, the shelter is offering a 50-percent discount on adoption fees for dogs — excluding puppies and dachshunds — through Saturday, Nov. 26. This means for the cost of just $20, “you can adopt any of these amazing dogs and show them the love they deserve,” according to the shelter’s Facebook page.
In addition, there are currently three dogs at the shelter that are free because their adoption fees have been sponsored.
Besides having a large number of canines, the animal shelter says it is “seriously at capacity” when it comes to felines, leaving both the adoption rooms and the community room completely full.
“This means that as we continue to get surrenders, strays, etc…. Decisions may have to be made,” the Franklin County Animal Shelter wrote on Facebook on Tuesday, Nov. 23. “Every condo is full some are doubled! Every one of the cats deserve an amazing home and they all have wonderful personalities! Please, do not let us get to the point that we even have to consider the ‘E’ word.”
The shelter is offering half-off adoptions for cats and kittens, which brings the adoption fee down to $10. On top of that, the adoption costs for several felines have already been sponsored.
Even if you cannot bring home a new pet at this time, the shelter urges you to help with the adoption efforts by sharing the shelter’s social media posts or sponsoring adoption fees.
You can check out pictures and descriptions of the Franklin County Animal Shelter’s adoptable dogs– as well as the ones on stray hold — below:
Chase is an 8-year-old pit/lab mix whose adoption fee is sponsored as of Nov. 23, 2021. According to the Franklin County Animal Shelter, “This sweet boy is our longest resident and is begging for someone to give him a chance! Chase may have a few years on him but he’s not done living. Please don’t make him spend one more night in the shelter. He’s already neutered, housebroken, and walks great on leash. Chase has done well with children, but we ask that they meet him at the shelter before going home. Chase is a big boy, he’s gentle but he may accidentally knock over a small child. He’s very food/treat motivated! He loves to play and chew on his bones. Chase didn’t mind the cats, but he absolutely must be the only dog in the home. Please look past his age and give this boy a great rest of his life! He loves car rides as well! Perfect companion!” (Photo: Courtesy Franklin County Animal Shelter)
Aspen is a 1-year-old pit mix who is available for adoption as of Nov. 23, 2021. According to the Franklin County Animal Shelter, he is “Great on leash, keeps a clean kennel, and loves children. Very active, sweet boy. Cat tested well but does require a meet and greet with another dog. He does get along with most, but we want to be safe.” (Photo: Courtesy Franklin County Animal Shelter)
MJ is a 4-year-old pit/boxer mix who is available for adoption as of Nov. 23, 2021. According to the Franklin County Animal Shelter, “This girl is sweet, but does become vocal behind kennel doors, so please do not let that deter you from meeting her. She walks well on leash, is housebroken, and is treat motivated. She is not to live with any small dogs or cats! She will require a meet and greet with any other dogs. We prefer that she have a small child free home. She definitely has the best smile around.” (Photo: Courtesy Franklin County Animal Shelter)
Tucker is a 1-year-old hound mix. He is a stray hold, but he will be available for adoption on Nov. 26, 2021. According to the Franklin County Animal Shelter, “This boy is absolutely the sweetest boy around. He is very calm and loving. He keeps a clean kennel and has good leash manners.” (Photo: Courtesy Franklin County Animal Shelter)
Prince is a 1-year-old Shepherd mix who is available for adoption as of Nov. 23, 2021. According to the Franklin County Animal Shelter, “This boy definitely still has some puppy left in him. He has great leash manners and is treat motivated. He is all about having a good time! He would be wonderful for an athletic family.” (Photo: Courtesy Franklin County Animal Shelter)
Remi is a 1-year-old pit mix who is available for adoption as of Nov. 23, 2021. According to the Franklin County Animal Shelter, “This boy seriously has it all!!! He’s already had all of his vetting. He has found himself homeless by absolutely no fault of his own. This boy is housebroken, leash trained, and is absolutely a lap dog. He is great with other dogs, and loves children. He does still have some puppy energy, but he has his calm side too.” (Photo: Courtesy Franklin County Animal Shelter)
Daisy is a 2-year-old husky mix who was surrendered on Nov. 23, 2021. According to the Franklin County Animal Shelter, “She is timid at first with people, but is sweet as can be. So far, she seems to be good with other dogs, but we will continue to test her.” (Photo: Courtesy Franklin County Animal Shelter)
Whiskey is a 4-year-old Jack Russell Terrier mix whose adoption fee is sponsored as of Nov. 23, 2021. According to the Franklin County Animal Shelter, “This girl will definitely keep you on your toes. She is so much fun. She loves to play in the yard and do her zoomies. She gets along with other dogs and has tested well with cats (but use caution as some JRT will chase cats if they run). She can be vocal, but she is absolutely lovable and will lay with you once her energy is burned. This sweet girl is absolutely NO Children! An active family would be ideal or a fenced in yard.” (Photo: Courtesy Franklin County Animal Shelter)
Melody is a 1-year-old Shepherd mix who is available for adoption as of Nov. 23, 2021. According to the Franklin County Animal Shelter, “This is our sweetheart of the shelter! She is very timid at first and the reason she was surrendered. She has already been spayed and microchipped! She requires someone that is patient and willing to give her the time needed to decompress. Melody went to our event Saturday and was amazing! She has great leash skills, wonderful with other dogs and cats, and loves children (but please understand they need to give her space if she asks for it). Melody loves to play in the field and loves to play fetch. We prefer that Melody has a meet and greet with her new family twice before going home. She will be considered a flight risk at first, so leash walks or a fenced in yard is a must. Please understand, these requirements are for her safety until she has bonded with her new family.” (Photo: Courtesy Franklin County Animal Shelter)
Amos is a 6-year-old hound whose adoption fee is sponsored as of Nov. 23, 2021. According to the Franklin County Animal Shelter, “This boy is absolutely nothing but goofy! He’s a big boy, but loves children.” (Photo: Courtesy Franklin County Animal Shelter)

This girl rides great, walks amazing on leash and is housebroken.” (Photo: Courtesy Franklin County Animal Shelter)
